Spine Calculator

Soft cover layout

The book cover is laid out as one piece: 1 – spine, 2 – bleed and 3 – front and back cover size. In this example the size of the book is 148 x 210 mm, 248 pages on 80 gsm offset. From the spine calculator with “80 gsm offset” and “soft cover” selected we get 13.3 mm.

Hard cover layout

1 – Spine thickness from calculator with “Hard cover” selected. In the example of 248 pages on 80 gsm offset this would be 17 mm.

2 – 8 mm joint.

3 – Trimmed book block size.

4 – Card overhang of 4 mm, which is automatically included in dimension “3”.

5 – Finished cover height = block height +4 mm + 4 mm.

6 – 20mm addional for wraparound.

7 – Horizontal formula: 6+3+2+1+2+3+6 = Total width.

8 – Vertical formula: 6+4+3+4+6 = Total height.
